We live in a post-truth dystopia, whether we like it or not. Cognitive biases, cognitive distortions, defense mechanisms, myths, superstitions and logical fallacies have a way of sneaking into thoughts and conversations. We’re all guilty of them in some way, shape or form, and at various times in our lives, but we can use our intelligence and personality to navigate through this often-tangled mess. Social issues such as viruses, vaccines, climate change, presidential elections, and every flavor of natural or man-made tragedy have infiltrated our thoughts. Rather than let it all get you down, have fun learning critical thinking skills and quizzing your family and friends with these printable flash cards to spot and avoid flaws in reasoning, as well as help you develop strong philosophical arguments, so that you can be the best version of yourself and make informed choices.

We need all the help we can get with interpersonal relationships, communication skills, diversity, equity and inclusion, when it comes to judging people fairly, showing empathy, and treating each other well. Arguments that are weak tend to use bias in place of cogent logic. They’re like tricks or illusions of thought, and they’re often very sneakily used by politicians, news media, religious leaders, commercial advertising agencies, marketing companies, unethical salespeople, manipulators, debaters and others to fool people. Don’t be fooled.

Cognitive biases are systematic thought processes caused by the tendency of the human brain to simplify information processing through a filter of personal experience and preferences. The filtering process is a coping mechanism that enables the brain to prioritize and process large amounts of information quickly.

Cognitive distortions are internal mental filters or biases that increase our misery, fuel our anxiety, and make us feel bad about ourselves. Our brains are continually processing lots of information. To deal with this, our brains seek shortcuts to cut down our mental burden. Logical fallacies are arguments that may sound convincing or true but is actually flawed. Logical fallacies are leaps of logic that lead us to an unsupported conclusion. People may commit a logical fallacy unintentionally, due to poor reasoning, or intentionally, in order to manipulate others.

Myths are stories that are based on tradition. Some may have factual origins, while others are completely fictional. But myths are more than mere stories and they serve a more profound purpose in ancient and modern cultures. Myths are sacred tales that explain the world and the human experience. But don't be fooled by myths. It's better to use science, critical thinking and common sense to explain the world today.

Superstitions are irrational or supernatural beliefs or practices, which are attributed to fate or magic, perceived supernatural influence, or fear of that which is unknown. These tricks of the mind often hold us back and may influence our decisions in life, possibly big decisions. Don't get caught up in superstitious thinking. With astounding advances in almost every facet of modern life from medicine, technology, healthcare, and education to astronomy, evolution, physics, science, and psychology, there is no reason why we need to hang on to old superstitions that don't make any practical sense.

The theory of multiple intelligences was first proposed by Howard Gardner in his 1983 book "Frames of Mind", where he broadens the definition of intelligence and outlines several distinct types of intellectual competencies. Gardner developed a series of eight inclusion criteria while evaluating each candidate intelligence that was based on a variety of scientific disciplines. In personality typology, Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personalities are a way to explain how people perceive the world and make decisions. This measurement of personality has four categories: introversion or extraversion, sensing or intuition, thinking or feeling, and judging or perceiving.
